課程概述

This independent study course is tailor-made for Dai Yunfang, third year PhD student. It has two objectives:(1) It aims to trace the reception history of Shakespeare, particularly Charles and Mary Lambs’ Tales from Shakespeare, in China back to the first period at the turn of the twentieth century. It examines the reception of Shakespeare in early modern China, including how Shakespeare traveled to China; the Bard’s first readers and audience in the Chinese contexts. (2) It further attempts to employ translation approaches to look at the early adaptations of Shakespeare’s tales, and to investigate their role in shaping early modern Chinese literature.

To engage in a comparative research into the Bard’s influence on early modern Chinese literature, drama, and translation.
 
課程要求
Requirements:
The student is required to turn in a one-to-two page critique (critical summary) on an assigned essay or a book chapter every two weeks. By the end of the term, the student is expected to have developed a critical tool to conduct a comparative or influence study between the Bard and his Chinese offspring.
